Walter L. Sweeney, Jr

Experience
Walter L. Sweeney Jr. is currently the Chief of Police in Hanover, MA. Sweeney has been a member of the department for 43 years. His assignments within the department have included emergency dispatch and call taking, patrol officer, Sergeant for both patrol and investigations, Lieutenant serving as the Executive Officer for the department, and for the past 13 years Chief of Police. In this capacity, he has supervised patrol, investigations, administration, E911, and emergency dispatch for Police, fire, and EMS. In addition to his law enforcement duties, Sweeney has served on multiple occasions as the Acting Town Manager for the Town of Hanover.

Notable Accomplishments
Sweeney currently serves as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Southeastern Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association and previously served as President of the Plymouth County Police Chief’s Association and the Plymouth County Detective’s Association. Sweeney has served on the Chiefs Advisory Board of the Plymouth County Outreach Program since its inception.

Sweeney is a certified Instructor for the Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC). His subject matter expertise includes community policing, juvenile issues, problem-solving, and the investigation of hate-motivated crimes. Sweeney authored a study of police response to mental health issues in the community, published by the Police Foundation, Washington D.C. He also holds certification from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Secondary Education, Private Occupational Instructor.

Professional Education
Sweeney earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from Stonehill College as well as a Master of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Western New England University. He is a graduate of Class 1, National Command Course at the FBI Academy, Quantico, VA as well as the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Program.
