Training

Pathway Deflection Academy

(A minimum of 16 hours up to 30 hours) training that includes the concept and practices for Deflection “Pathways” (Pre-arrest Diversion).  Training includes gaining an understanding of the six (6) Deflection Pathways; 1) Intake or self-referral, 2) Active outreach, 3) Naloxone Plus (QRT-Quick Response Team), 4) officer intervention, 5) first responder prevention.  A newly created 6th pathway, Community Responder, is identified and introduced.

Each of the “Pathways” will be introduced to students to integrate all the pathways (or those determined for implementation by the site).  Site responses will focus on persons who have experienced overdoses and provide education and understanding of how to engage “at-risk” and vulnerable persons suffering from substance use disorders.  Other areas encompassed in training include addressing the needs of those suffering from mental health disorders, drug-exposed children, impacts of trauma and trauma-informed responses, family support initiatives, situational awareness, de-escalation and bringing public safety, public health, and community partners together to address their community social health needs.

Training is delivered in person through a two-instructor-led team.  Our instructor teams consist of a hybrid of first responder executives, public health, community, and/or persons with lived experience.  We have delivered this Deflection Academy training successfully to Deflection sites in Connecticut, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Illinois.  Our Deflection Academy training is interactive, with individual and group exercises as well as an innovative role-play scenario-based training module.  This curriculum has been reviewed by nationally recognized experts from the fields of public safety, public health, and community advocacy organizations, focusing on best practices from the field.

Continuous Education

O2SL and QRT National will provide continuing education training events as needed or required.  We offer bi-annual continuous education training to sites/clients. The training event topics are identified through analysis of the PMAT, discussions with site leaders at regular intervals or meetings, and through technical assistance requests.

Our team utilizes the expertise of O2SL and QRT National partners and subject matter experts from various Pre-Arrest Diversion and Deflection service backgrounds. O2SL and QRT National will coordinate the continuous education events in partnership with other site leadership and field representatives. The training events can be hosted virtually and/or can be in person.
